Doggy Day Out

Doggy Day Out

Spending just a few hours with our shelter dogs can help them release their built-up energy and embrace fresh experiences and interactions with people.

A "Doggy Day Out" can have a tremendous impact on our dogs by helping them feel calmer and less overstimulated when meeting potential adopters.  It also gives them the opportunity to develop important life skills they wouldn't gain by staying solely in the shelter environment.  Another wonderful benefit of the program is that it introduces our adoptable animals to people who may not otherwise visit the shelter.  Thank you for helping improve our dogs' well-being and increasing their chances of finding loving forever homes!

To be a Doggy Day Out volunteer, you cannot have any criminal offenses pertaining to physical abuse of people or animals, battery, or illegal substance possession.

"Doggy Day Out is a great way to help the dogs in the shelter.  I am not allowed to have pets where I live, so this is a fun way for me to get to experience having a pet."  - Linda S.

Here are some important things to note:

  • Before you pick up your dog, be prepared for anything.  Many shelter dogs have unknow backgrounds, so their personality may change as they become more comfortable outside the shelter.  We do our best to match dogs with the right people based on the information we have.

  • An adult (18+) must always control the dog, and dogs should never be left unattended with children.

  • Make sure your vehicle is safely prepared for transport, with enough space, a crate or barrier if needed, and a way to keep the dog away from the driver.

  • Please leave your personal pets at home.  These outings are meant for shelter dogs to enjoy one-on-one time with humans.  While some shelter dogs are friendly with other dogs, keep at least 20 feet away from other dogs in public.  MCAS is not responsible for any issues or veterinary expenses involving your personal pets.

  • If you encounter someone who is interested in adopting your dog, please give them MCAS information so that they may follow up with us at the shelter.
