Trap-Neuter-Release

Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR)

Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) is a humane method to manage feral and free-roaming cat populations by trapping, sterilizing, and returning them to their outdoor homes.

TNR is a program designed to control the population of unowned, outdoor cats while improving their welfare.  Cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for identification (the universal sign that a cat has been sterilized through a TNR program).

Goals and Benefits:

  • Prevent new kittens from being born, reducing population growth over time.

  • Reduce nuisance behaviors such as yowling, fighting, roaming, and spraying.

  • Improve cat health by preventing reproductive diseases and providing vaccinations.

  • Decrease shelter intake and euthanasia, saving lives and taxpayer money.

  • Maintain stable colonies, preventing the "vacuum effect" where removed cats are replaced by new ones.
